What are cold sores / fever blisters?
A cold sore is a small, painful blister usually found on or around the lips caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). Cold sores are common, contagious, and can be triggered by stress, illness, sun exposure, or lack of sleep.
Symptoms of cold sores / fever blisters may include:
- tingling, itching, burning, or pain around the lips before a blister appears.
- small fluid-filled blisters
- redness
- crusting
- swelling
- tenderness, or discomfort while eating or drinking
- some people also experience fever, swollen lymph nodes, or fatigue during initial outbreaks
